Manual Osteopathy in Cochrane
Manual Osteopathy is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that uses a hands-on approach to investigate and treat bodily dysfunctions.
The body is assessed as a whole, rather than the mere investigating a symptom. The goal is to bring the body’s structure and function back to a state of optimal health.
There are 4 main “branches” to Manual Osteopathic therapy.
- Cranial Sacral Techniques: to improve the Primary Respiratory Mechanism which includes mobility of cranial bones, skeletal structures, meninges (connective tissues), central nervous system and circulation of all fluids.
- Visceral Techniques: aid in increasing mobility and motility (function) of the organs of the body.
- Joint and Fascial Mobilization: aiding in releasing “stuck joints” by engaging with soft tissues and fascial manipulation that help increase range of motion along with Myofascial remodeling that allows the release of fascial restriction/adhesion to increase circulation.
- Lymphatic Techniques: aid to enhancing fluid flow releasing congested toxic areas to improve immunity
Your Manual Osteopathic may use some or all of the techniques in any given treatment session. An example of what this looks like would be:
Let’s say you have pain in your right shoulder. Your Manual Osteopathic Therapist would:
- Examine the joint and soft tissue around the shoulder.
- Assess the pelvis, because if imbalanced will drop your shoulder and create a strain.
- Check the spinal column, because inflamed nerves can send pain to the shoulder.
- Palpate the liver and gall bladder, because dysfunction in those organs radiate pain to the right shoulder.
- Assess the fluid dynamics in and out of the shoulder, because congestion is linked with pain.
Some of the most common reasons that people seek Manual Osteopathy are:
- Whiplash associated disorder
- Concussion
- Sport injuries
- Repetitive strain
- Migraines
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
- Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD)
- Digestive issues
- Hormonal imbalances
- Painful menstruation
